Teachers
Tim Atkins
I’ve been a teacher for a long time—and a writer even longer. They are two sides of the same coin: both are all about the joys of discovery and the feeling of being in a happy and valued conversation. I’ve mentored award-winning writers, and guided and supported hundreds of writers all the way from coming up with first ideas through to book deals and publication. I know lots of places to find inspiration—and lots of ways you can develop and refine your creative practice; I also know what it’s like to have writer’s block and how to get through it.
For me, teaching and mentoring is an exciting dance that two people embark on with the purpose of having fun on the journey and feeling satisfaction on reaching the destination. I may have read and written lots of books—but in my workshops and classes we’ll all meet as talented, creative, and sensitive equals. That’s the joy of it.
I have always been an artist, but it was discovering experimental poetry that allowed me to finally find my element. After the initial shock of “What is this and how should I read it?”, I fell in love with the complete freedom that experimental writing gives. I also appreciated the complete responsibility—I learnt that I could do whatever I wanted as long as the concept was strong. I have taught languages for a long time, but teaching experimental writing is the most fulfilling.
I love how my students blossom under my wing, creating pieces they never thought possible, learning to trust their instincts, and becoming confident writers. Working with me nurtures, challenges and is really, really fun. I feel privileged to share the gift of experimental writing.
