Transgressive Writing
Duration: 4 weeks
Teacher: Tim Atkins
Days: Wednesdays, 7pm–9:15pm
Starting date: 22 July
22, 29 July / 5, 12 August
Transgressive writing asks us how we can push boundaries as writers, and what it means to experience life at or beyond acceptable limits. Transgression is about asking questions—questions of ourselves and of our readers. In this short course we’ll look at the work of Kathy Acker, Charles Baudelaire, Dodie Bellamy and others. We’ll develop an understanding of their ideas and methods, and create our own pieces that explore the territory of transgression—all of which will occur in a respectful and supportive writing environment. What is on the other side? What does that even mean? Dive in and find out.
Experimental Life Writing
Duration: 11 weeks
Teacher: Tim Atkins
Days: Tuesdays, 7pm–9:15pm
Starting date: 2 June
Classes: 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 June / 7, 14, 21, 28 July / 4, 11 August
What is life? What is writing? Who, these days, lives anything even close to a straight life? With this idea in mind, Experimental Life Writing provides the tools and the environment for us to explore and our lives through a variety of innovative forms—and the experimental forms with which we can reshape and reimagine our lives. We’ll read a wide range of writers: Bernadette Mayer, Konrad Bayer, Eleni Sikelianos, Kobayashi Issa, Kevin Killian, Jalāl al-Dīn Muḥammad Rūmī, Lyn Hejinian, and Ntozake Shange, amongst others, and see how their chosen experimental forms allow them to shape their lives through their writing. In-class lectures, readings, workshop exercises, discussions and close readings all make up important parts of the module. What is life? Start writing and find out.
Writing with Constraints
Duration: 4 weeks
Teacher: Michał Kamil Piotrowski
Days: Thursdays, 7pm–9:15pm
Starting date: 16 July
Classes: 16, 23, 30 July / 6th August
Writing with Constraints is a four-week creative adventure designed to help you discover the freedom hidden within limits. Each session explores different forms of self-imposed limitation, from texts that avoid particular letters, and poems shaped to follow a strict word count, to inventive responses to paintings, or unconventional formats. Each week, you will write, share (if comfortable), reflect, and discuss, transforming constraints into creative tools that allow you to write better, more consciously, and with way more fun! You will discover how constraints can challenge habits and elevate your language, and learn to set (and bend) rules to suit your voice. Guided by prompts, group discussions, and peer feedback, you’ll develop a portfolio of a minimum of eight pieces. Whether you are a poet, storyteller, or simply looking for creative fun, Writing with Constraints will help you see writing as a space of endless invention. If you are curious about how structure can unleash creativity, then this course is for you!
